Getting to our next destination, Marathon TX, from Bisbee, AZ was a breeze. We saw fewer than a dozen cars or trucks in the first two hours of our trip. Then flashing lights and police cars stopped us….to make way for a parade of really, really, really wide loads. We learned that these were special scooping attachments for mining operations.

The Gage Hotel in Marathon, TX was our next stop. And it totally lived up to our expectations. Beautiful, luxurious, restful. The pictures in the bottom section of this post tell the story.
First, we’ll talk about the wall along the Mexican border. We first noticed it as a dark slash on the horizon and thought that it might be a freight train. Nope. The wall is especially controversial in the area surrounding Big Bend National Park. In addition to the wall, the security of our border is also monitored by officers in trucks, in helecoptors and even blimps. One person in Marathon expressed dismay about the cost of the project — she estimated that it was costing nearly a million dollars for each “capture.” I’m sure her claim is exaggerated, but it makes the point.

(Sorry for the glare!) These flyers were posted at the Gage Hotel’s casual restaurant where we saw two guys both dressed in black driving a remarkably new and undented van stop in for coffee. Scary.
What wasn’t scary, was our stay. We decided relaxing and resting were the first priorities and skipped a trip into the park this time.

A morning at the pool was terrific!

Departure morning was spent in the hotel’s garden. It’s available for private events….so if you know anyone who is getting married in West Texas, please recommend this place!
